7 cats killed in east Las Vegas apartment fire

Updated Saturday, July 28, 2018 | 9:16 p.m.

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation and seven cats were killed Saturday afternoon in a fire at an east Las Vegas apartment complex, according to Las Vegas Fire & Rescue.

The blaze left six people without a home, officials said.

Crews at about 4:15 p.m. responded to the Oasis Springs Apartments at 451 Nellis Boulevard, near Bonanza Road, and encountered heavy flames and smoke billowing from a second-floor unit, officials said.

Firefighters found the cats after they extinguished the fire in less than 10 minutes, officials said. An eighth cat survived, and the two adult residents refused hospitalization, but were treated at the scene.

Investigators believe the fire started on a balcony area, although they haven’t determined a cause.

The apartment below sustained water damage, and two adults and two children there were displaced, officials said. The incident caused about $30,000 in damage.
