Updated Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018 | 11:48 a.m.

A 16-year-old boy shot Tuesday afternoon in a North Las Vegas strip mall parking lot has died, according to police.

The victim was taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries, North Las Vegas Police said.

Officers responded about 2 p.m. to the shooting near West Centennial Parkway and Goldfield Street, police said.

A preliminary investigation indicates the suspect walked up to the teen and shot him multiple times, police said. The suspect fled before officers arrived. Investigators do not believe this was a random act of violence and were looking into the relationship between the victim and suspect, police said.

Interviews were being conducted to try to find out what may have led to the shooting, police said. School at a nearby campus had just been let out and there were multiple people in the area when the shooting occurred.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the teen's name after his family is notified, police said.
