The Durango football team trailed by 16 points in the second quarter Friday against Centennial and appeared headed to a second straight defeat to open the season.
Then, junior quarterback Maverik Cormier started to gain confidence, and the Durango defense didn’t allow any more points. The end result was an impressive 32-28 win.
“I am so proud of our kids. They didn’t quit,” Durango coach Toby Henry said. “They had a great attitude when we got down. You could tell they thought we were going to win.”
Andre Washington helped change Durango’s fortunes when he blocked a punt in the third quarter and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Cormier had touchdown passes to Brayden Iverson and Jaxon Young.
Earlier in the game, Cole Marquez had a rushing touchdown.
