Henderson officials on Tuesday approved a plan to buy the former Fiesta Henderson casino from Station Casinos for $32 million.

City leaders said they plan to develop a “multi-use indoor community sports facility” at the 35-acre site, which is just west of downtown Henderson.

Station closed Fiesta Henderson in March 2020 because of the burgeoning coronavirus pandemic at the time. The facility never reopened.

“Ideally positioned at the gateway to Henderson’s newly revitalized downtown, this site has tremendous potential to bring quality of life amenities and economic opportunities to the community,” said Henderson Mayor Debra March in a statement.

City leaders hope to “develop the land with a state-of-the-art multi-use community sports facility designed to revitalize the east side of Henderson by providing indoor recreational opportunities and boost tourism through national, regional, and local tournaments,” according to a news release.

Once the project is complete — plans are expected to be finalized at some point next year — Richard Derrick, Henderson’s city manager, said the facility could generate an annual economic impact of close to $40 million.

In July, Station Casinos announced it would tear down Fiesta Henderson and sell the resort’s land to developers.

The developer turned out to be the city itself.

By investing in the site, city leaders hope to attract “additional private development” in the area, according to the news release.

In a statement, Scott Kreeger, president of Station Casinos, said the company is pleased that the site will be used “in such a positive way for the Henderson community.”

Most of the buildings that made up the Fiesta Henderson property have been razed, though the parking structure there will remain, according to a Station Casinos spokesman.

The hotel casino, originally named The Reserve, opened in 1998. It was purchased by Station Casinos in 2001 and rebranded as Fiesta Henderson with a southwestern party theme.
