Monkeypox a factor in man’s death, Las Vegas health officials say

The Southern Nevada Health District has reported the first death of a Clark County resident diagnosed with monkeypox.

The patient, a man over 50, had underlying medical conditions and was severely immunocompromised, district officials said.

While the man’s death was attributed to other causes, monkeypox was a factor, officials said.

“This is a tragic situation, and our sympathies are with his family and friends,” Dr. Fermin Leguen, the district health officer, said in a statement.

While anyone can contract monkeypox, immunocompromised people are at more risk for serious illness and complications, officials said.

Clark County confirmed its first monkeypox case in June.

As of Tuesday, the district reported 270 confirmed or probable cases of monkeypox in Clark County.
