The son of a Nevada state senator and North Las Vegas mayoral candidate has been arrested for attempted murder and related charges after a shooting Thursday.

Democratic Sen. Pat Spearman confirmed Friday that her son, Na’onche Osborne, was taken into custody for allegedly shooting her nephew, David, during an altercation inside her North Las Vegas home Thursday evening, while she was at Sedway Middle School for an event.

“Na’onche made a very poor decision, and he will have to face the consequences that come with that decision,” Spearman said in a news conference Friday afternoon. “As his mother, I will support both the justice system and my son. It is with a heavy heart that my family is impacted by gun violence.”

Osborne, 21, was booked into the North Las Vegas Community Correction center for attempted murder, battery with use of a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm and discharging a gun at or into an occupied structure or vehicle.

North Las Vegas Police responded about 6:45 p.m. Thursday to Spearman’s residence near the 4100 block of Erinbird Avenue. Her nephew, David — whose last name she did not provide and whom police believe to be in his forties — was located with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to University Medical Center and remains in stable condition, police said.

Police said officers “were later able to locate and arrest” Osborne, though Spearman said he voluntarily surrendered.

Spearman said she adopted Osborne when he was a teenager, with the goal of giving him a loving and supportive home. He witnessed violence early in his life, Spearman said, and she knew raising him would be a challenge.

“He made a bad decision last night that could have had much more tragic results,” she said. “Thank God my nephew will recover.”

Spearman has served in the Nevada State Senate since 2012, according to her website. She will continue to campaign for mayor of North Las Vegas after the shooting, spokeswoman Lisa Mayo-DeRiso said during the news conference Friday.

Spearman requested prayers for her family at this time, emphasizing that her son’s arrest and her nephew’s injuries are “physical and emotional wounds,” and should not be politicized by her opponent or her supporters.

She is facing North Las Vegas Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown in the Nov. 8 mayoral race.

“My resolve to continue my leadership role in our community is stronger than ever,” Spearman said at the news conference Friday.
