The Spring Valley football program won the first playoff game in the school’s nearly 20-year history tonight with a 26-0 victory at Cimarron-Memorial.

The Grizzles program has enjoyed many highs over the years, including a victory at Sam Boyd Stadium in the mid-2000s against Bishop Gorman. But tonight will be a game that coach Marcus Teal — who has been with the program since its maiden season and in 2010 became the head coach — will forever cherish.

“It was a defensive battle,” Teal said. “We put our defense in a bad spot a few times, but they took care of us and kept them out of the endzone.”

Dylan Phelps had an interception return for a touchdown to lead the defensive effort, while Tipisone Manu and Charles Parks had rushing touchdowns.

Manu broke multiple tackles on his scoring run in the second half to extend the Spring Valley lead to 13-0 — a run that gave the Grizzles much momentum, Teal said.

Alec Livingston had a touchdown reception in the first half for Spring Valley, who plays Las Vegas in the class 4A state quarterfinals next week.

Teal doesn’t feel like waiting another 20 years for a playoff win. He’s looking for the next win in eight days.

“We went into the tournament thinking we were in a good spot,” Teal said
