The Basic Academy football team hasn't given up a defensive point in four of five games this season, blanking visiting Spring Valley 27-0 tonight to win a fifth straight game to open the season.

“Spring Valley is a good team. They aren’t a pushover, and we handled them,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said.

Cahill said senior nose guard Domingo Cleveland was unstoppable with four tackles for a loss and two sacks. Linebacker Anthony Sanitoa added double digit tackles and one sack, and cornerbacks Marcellus Moore and Avonte Toombs have been solid all season.

“We are able to send extra rushers because they are locking down (the opposing team’s receivers),” Cahill said.

Moore also shined offensively tonight with a rushing and receiving touchdown. Robert Wren rushed for a touchdown, Zuri Whiters had a touchdown reception and quarterback Joseph Garza had a pair of touchdown passes.

Up next: A rivalry game with Green Valley in Henderson Bowl. With the way the Basic defense is playing, Cahill is hopeful to snap a brief losing skid against Green Valley.

“We have some really good players (on defense),” the coach said. “We think we are pretty good, and we are getting better and better every week.”
