Estaban Martinez had a pair of touchdown runs Friday night for the host Green Valley football team in a 30-18 defeat against Herriman of Utah.

Martinez scored on a nifty 45-yard run in the first half, and then closed the scoring with a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Gators led 12-7 at halftime, but surrendered 23 unanswered points in dropping the season opener. Herriman, a Class 6A school, dressed more than double the number of players — and it showed as Green Valley arguably wore down late in the game.

“Our team has shown some good strides,” Green Valley coach Clay Mauro said. “At the end of the day I am proud of the progress.”

Quarterback Jack Thow added to the Green Valley scoring with a 37-yard touchdown pass to Ben Byington.
