Apartment building destroyed by fire west of Las Vegas Strip

A person was detained and questioned after a fire destroyed an apartment building this morning, displacing 21 people, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

No injuries were reported.

The fire is under investigation, officials said, and no additional information was released about the person who was detained.

The fire was reported about 8:40 a.m. by a passerby who saw smoke and flames coming from a window in a two-story apartment building in the 4200 block of West Viking Road, officials said. The complex is located near Flamingo Road and Arville Street, west of the Las Vegas Strip.

By the time firefighters arrived, the first floor of the building was engulfed in flames, which were extending into the attic, officials said.

Firefighters had the blaze largely extinguished by about 9:30 a.m., officials said. The building was a total loss, but a damage estimate was not immediately available, officials said.

A total of 18 adults, three children and 10 animals were displaced as a result of the fire, officials said.
