A man stole a police vehicle and carjacked several people, including a driver who was killed, during a chase and shooting that ended with the suspect dead, according to Metro Police.

Police said they received several reports about 3:45 a.m. today of shooting near Placid Street and Maulding Avenue, south of the Las Vegas airport.

Officers arriving in the area heard shots and began to canvas the area, police said. Officers then spotted an unoccupied patrol vehicle that had been struck by gunfire, police said.

They took cover and attempted seal off the area, but a man broke through, got into an unoccupied patrol vehicle and fled, police said.

They chased the suspect to the 7300 block of South Durango Drive, where he abandoned the police vehicle and carjacked a person in a truck at gunpoint, police said.

The suspect fled to the 8500 block of Blue Diamond Road, where he abandoned the stolen truck and carjacked another person in an SUV, police said.

An officer fired their weapon before the man fled in the SUV to the area of Durango Drive and Windmill Lane, where he got out and and pointed a gun at a person in a van, police said.

A shot was heard, and officers saw the suspect removing an injured person from the van, police said. Metro and Nevada State Police officers fired their guns toward the van as it fled, police said.

Officers requested medical attention for the injured citizen, who was later pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The van eventually stopped at Durango Drive and Agate Avenue, police said. The suspect was in the vehicle still armed, and the incident was deemed a barricade situation, police said.

SWAT officers eventually approached the van and saw that the suspect was injured, police said. Medics responded, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No officers were injured during the episode, police said.
