The Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation announced today it will be expanding a rural health care grant program to help several hospitals in Southern Nevada.

“Bringing this program to more Nevada communities will lead to increased investment, strengthening the workforce talent pipeline and expanding health care access for rural Nevadans across the state,” Lisa Levine, executive director of the office, said in a statement.

The United States Department of Labor approved the office’s request to expand its H-1B rural health care grant program. It funds employment and training in the medical field in rural areas.

The expansion will bring grant resources to Mesa View Hospital in Mesquite, Desert View Hospital in Pahrump and Boulder City Hospital.

In 2021, the U.S. Department of Labor awarded Nevada $2.5 million “to alleviate workforce shortages in Nevada’s rural counties.”

Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Humboldt, Lander, Lincoln, Lyon, Mineral, Pershing and White Pine counties have used workforce development services from this grant since its inception.

The Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation has partnered with the Nevada Hospital Association and Nevadaworks — Northern Nevada’s workforce development board — to invest in health care training programs.

“The NHA is proud to partner with GOWINN to expand this program,” Patrick Kelly, CEO of the Nevada Hospital Association, said in a statement. “Together we will increase the development of Nevada’s health care workforce to rural communities who need greater access to services.”
