Metro: Man steals police vehicle, gets into critical-injury crash

A Las Vegas man stole a police vehicle Tuesday night and got into a crash, injuring himself and two other people, according to Metro Police.

Officers responded about 11:10 p.m. to a call regarding a person who was possibly experiencing a mental health crisis near Blue Diamond Road and South Buffalo Drive, police said.

The subject encountered the first arriving officer and was able to take a marked Metro vehicle, a Ford F-150 pickup truck, police said.

A few minutes later, the truck, now headed north on Rainbow Boulevard, approaching Hacienda Avenue, crossed into the southbound lanes as it entered the intersection on a red light, police said.

It collided with an SUV that was headed east on Hacienda and had the green light, police said.

The 29-year-old man in the police vehicle was taken into custody and transported to University Medical Center with substantial injuries, police said.

The driver of the SUV, a 34-year-old Las Vegas woman, and a passenger, a 43-year-old Las Vegas man, were also taken to UMC with critical injuries, police said.
