Metro releases more details on officer-involved shooting in Las Vegas this week

Metro Police released more details today on an officer involved shooting this week near the campus of UNLV in a news release.

The suspect charged after allegedly charging at an officer with a knife Tuesday was identified as Tristan Cooper.

On Tuesday, at about 10:30 p.m., dispatch received a call from Cooper, who stated he had a knife before hanging up.

Two officers responded to the area in the 1400 block of Harmon Avenue and found Cooper standing outside of his apartment. After a verbal exchange, the officers noticed Copper was holding an knife and told him to drop it, the release stated.

He then allegedly charged at the officers before one of them drew his weapon and fired at Cooper, according to the release. Cooper was struck by gunfire and momentarily fell to the ground, dropping the knife.

He quickly got back to his feet and led the officers on a foot pursuit through the apartment complex.

Cooper eventually collapsed to the ground in the 1300 block of University Avenue, where he was taken into custody.

He was transported to Sunrise Hospital, where he underwent surgery and is in stable condition, the release stated.
