Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro speaks during a press conference at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023.

Nevada Senate Majority Leader Nicole Cannizzaro will seek a third and final term, she said today in announcing a reelection campaign.

Cannizzaro, a Democrat, is the first woman majority leader in Nevada Senate history.

“I am excited to continue the fight to build stronger communities and a fairer, more equitable state,” she said in a statement.

“Nevadans deserve health care options that don’t break the bank, a qualified teacher in every classroom, and an economy that works for our working families, not just the wealthy and well-connected,” she said.

Cannizzaro narrowly beat Republican April Becker in 2020 for the four-year Senate term in District 6, winning by 631 votes in an election where 67,159 ballots were cast. The district includes parts of Summerlin.

Cannizzaro initially won election to the Nevada Legislature in 2016, also by a tight margin. She beat Victoria Seaman by 1,036 votes.

Cannizzaro is a Las Vegas native and a graduate of Chaparral High School and UNR.

She has a law degree from Boyd School of Law at UNLV and worked for more than a decade as a Clark County deputy district attorney before entering private practice.
