The path for the Bishop Gorman football team to be in contention for another national championship starts tonight against visiting Kahuku of Hawaii.

The Gaels, ranked No. 2 in the preseason by MaxPreps, are looking to make a splash in nonleague games against a slate of four nationally respected opponents to make a statement to pollsters who determine the national rankings.

The slate includes a game Aug. 24 against St. Thomas Aquinas in the humidity of south Florida and two weeks later against Mater Dei of Southern California. Mater Dei is equally respected nationally, giving Gorman the perfect spot to make its championship case.

But, first, the Gaels have to get through tonight. And they might not have a strong home field edge.

That’s because the Kahuku Raiders are Hawaii’s most popular high school team.

When they played here 2016, Las Vegas residents with ties to Hawaii — this, after all, is often called the Ninth Island — packed the stadium and passionately cheered from start to finish. Gorman started preselling tickets two weeks ago.

Of course, this isn’t the only game in town.

Palo Verde travels to face Las Vegas High, Durango heads to Overton to take on Class 3A power Moapa Valley and Foothill takes on Slam Nevada.

As usual, we’ll have scores as they become final. Send game updates on social media using #sunstandout.
