Clark County firefighters are struggling to contain a fire that caught 12 apartment units Wednesday afternoon in what officials initially believe to be caused by a gas leak.
The fire department received a call just past 2:30 p.m. of an apartment fire and responded to the 1000 block of Dumont Road, where multiple buildings were currently ablaze. The two-alarm fire was strong enough for flames to be seen coming through the roof, assistant fire chief Brian O’Neal said in a statement Wednesday.
O’Neal said the buildings caught in the fire have construction faults that make them more susceptible to catching fire, including voids in the building’s walls.
Over 70 personnel were deployed to respond to the fire and 10 fire trucks. Firefighters could be seen removing at least one animal from the building just past 3:30 p.m., and O’Neal said there was one unconfirmed report of smoke inhalation.
Several residents from the complex and surrounding apartments were evacuated and will be placed in temporary shelters, officials said.
As of 3:45 p.m. the fire has not yet been contained, O’Neal said, as the roof and voids in construction are causing difficulties in putting out the fire.
Road closures in the area are expected as firefighters continue to put out the fire and investigate the cause, officials said.
