Seth Wilson, 49, is seen in a photo from Metro Police. Wilson was fatally shot by police on Thursday, June 20, 2024, after threatening to shoot other residents with a rifle he was holding.

Metro Police officials released details Tuesday on an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead last week, displaying video of the man wielding a rifle and aiming it at both a civilian and officers.

Assistant Sheriff Yasenia Yatomi presented details on the shooting, which occurred the afternoon of June 20 at an apartment complex in the 200 block of North Ninth street. Several people called 911 about a man with a rifle and yelling threats, and responding police learned 49-year-old Seth Wilson, a resident of the apartment, was armed with a rifle inside the building.

Security footage from the apartment presented by police showed one resident accidentally walked in front of Wilson’s rifle as he was aiming it at the resident, not noticing Wilson from behind a door. The man then called police, who responded soon after.

“There’s a guy standing there holding a rifle, semiautomatic rifle, at the door where my head just was,” the resident said in the 911 call. “I’m thinking it can’t even be real.”

Initially, a police sergeant was able to contact Wilson by phone and attempted to persuade Wilson to surrender, however he hung up only minutes after. Wilson then exited his apartment on the third floor with the rifle, where Metro Police Tuesday then showed responding officers Andrew Buckland and Matthew Kravitz, also armed with rifles, were stationed.

Bodycam footage presented by the department showed the two officers ordering Wilson to drop the rifle. Wilson lowered the rifle toward the officers who then fired a total of 14 shots at the man. Wilson died at the scene and did not fire the rifle at any point.

Both officers have been put on administrative leave per Metro’s policy as the department continues to investigate the shooting. Wilson’s death is the fifth officer-involved shooting and the fifth fatal shooting by police in 2024. At this time in 2023, there had been only two officer-involved shootings, according to police.

A sixth officer-involved shooting occurred on Tuesday as well in a home in the 2000 block of Valley Drive after police responded to a robbery. The suspect who was shot is currently in the hospital, and their condition is unknown.
