First Friday in the Las Vegas Arts District brings together a wide variety of art, music and people. With so many types of art on display at First Friday, we wondered how people would define something so broad. So we decided to ask a few people to tell us their own definition of art.

The Downtown Arts District is adding Third Friday to its lineup of cultural festivities, along with First Fridays as seen in this photo from June. The first Third Friday will be January 15.

Taking place on the same streets and benefiting the same cause, Third Friday may appear to be similar to First Friday, but it’s projected to vary slightly.

If you notice something oddly familiar about tonight’s First Friday, then you’ve probably been around a few years.

The city chose this corridor on Casino Center Boulevard for enhancement because it's the hub of First Friday art events. It's part of a $2 million project that has planted trees, added lighting and widened sidewalks.

Anyone attending the First Friday street festival will be asked to cough up a $2 donation to help fund the monthly art-driven ruckus at Colorado Avenue and Casino Center Boulevard. The admission fee is an attempt by Whirlygig Inc. to help fund the 5-year-old event, which until recently received year-round support from the city. The city is still supporting First Friday to the tune of $80,000 annually but that pays for only six months.

The day of networking and lectures behind them, Americans for the Arts members headed downtown. Six bus loads ended up on Fremont Street for Jenny Holzer's public art display. Three buses headed to First Friday.Karen Mobley, arts director of the Spokane Arts Commission, opted for First Friday, an event in which she is well versed. Mobley is part of First Friday Art Walk in downtown Spokane, Wash., and has observed the trend of First Friday festivals in other cities.
