The Shadow Ridge High football team’s 25-6 loss to visiting Snow Canyon of Utah today to open the season was a lot closer than the final score indicates. The Mustangs had three touchdowns called back — the result of some first-game mistakes.

When the high school football season ended last November, then Shadow Ridge High senior quarterback Bakari Smith continued training. He purchased a membership to a local gym and would often put himself through grueling two-a-days workouts in preparation for his next football challenge. There was just one problem: he didn’t know when that challenge would come.

Palo High quarterback Parker Rose completed 9-of-14 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns Friday, and the Panthers closed the game with 29 unanswered points in beating host Shadow Ridge, 50-14, in the Northwest League opener for both schools.

Shadow Ridge spent all of last season in a state of transition. The school hired Frank Tousa as its new football coach a few weeks before practice started, meaning he had to scramble to get organized for the season. Most first-year coaches get to know their personnel in the offseason. Tousa had to do it while the Mustangs were playing games.
