Each year, a small selection of students are randomly picked to receive a $1,000 scholarship at the Sun Youth Forum. Here is a quick look at this year's recipients:
- Ellia Higuchi
- High School: Green Valley High School
- Clubs/Activities: Forensics, vice president of the BBYO
- College choice: University of California Berkeley or Stanford University
- Favorite part of the SYF: The opportunity to get the perspectives of people from different areas of Las Vegas and ideas that you don't get exposed to.
- This scholarship means: It means a lot to me. It gives me some freedom and advances my studies without having to think about the cost as much.
- Jerrica Byrd
- High School: Secta High School
- Clubs/Activities: Key Club and Book club
- College choice: University of Nevada, Las Vegas
- Favorite part of the SYF: I really liked my discussion topic, Teen Topics. Everyone had good opinions about it. We talked about the teen suicide rate and sexting. Meeting all the people, seeing my middle-school friends and people from all over the city.
- This scholarship means: It totally caught me off-guard. It offsets the cost of my education.
- Andrew Jacobson
- High School: Pale Verde
- Clubs/Activities: Track and cross country, National Honors Society
- College choice: Applied to Stanford and wants to study business
- Favorite part of the SYF: It's just fun being able to meet all these awesome kids and know what the kids think of all the issues facing Nevada.
- This scholarship means: This is great. It's always great to have some extra money for school.
- Emmitt Jordan
- High School: Las Vegas
- Clubs/Activities: Marching band and post-secondary classes
- College choice: Air Force Academy, wants to study aviation
- Favorite part of the SYF: I guess this (laughs). No, the whole thing. I almost didn't come, but I'm glad I did.
- This scholarship means: It's a big help. The academy is extremely expensive.
- Gaby Guerrero
- High School: Sierra Vista
- Clubs/Activities: French Club, Best Buddies, DECA
- College choice: UNLV or UNR, wants to study forensics
- Favorite part of the SYF: Hearing people's different points of view.
- This scholarship means: It will be such a relief for my parents. They'll be so happy.
- Nuria Wright-Garba
- High School: Boulder City
- Clubs/Activities: Track
- College choice: Portland University or San Diego State or UNR, wants to study geology or a physical science
- Favorite part of the SYF: Debating with the other students.
- This scholarship means: It means my parents won't yell at me.
