Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (10) warms up before the start of a preseason NFL football game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, in Tampa, Fla.

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have restarted with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Washington Redskins minus-2.5 vs. Detroit Lions: $330 to win $300

The offensive objectives of these two teams will differ tonight when they kick off the second week of NFL preseason action. The Lions might give quarterback Matthew Stafford a series or two, but they’ll be eager to move on to the two players competing for his backup spot in Kellen Moore and Dan Orlovsky.

Other starters, likely including Calvin Johnson, won’t play. The Redskins are expected to let their first unit run longer.

They’re desperate to build continuity under Robert Griffin III, who played well despite a mediocre statistical line in the Redskins’ preseason opener. Less scrutiny is paid to the other side of the ball, so it’s tough to say which team with a solid defense will have the edge.

But generally speaking, Washington coach Jay Gruden values preseason wins more than Detroit counterpart Jim Caldwell, who’s 6-11 in exhibition games throughout his career. Gruden has won four of five since taking over the Redskins.

The Washington fans crave any possible signs of optimism, and it looks like they’ll get a share of them tonight at FedEx Field.
