Vegas Play of the Day: Cubs at Cardinals

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

St. Louis Cardinals minus-125 vs. Chicago Cubs: $500 to win $400: Chicago starter Jake Arrieta five days ago pitched a complete game shutout against Minnesota in showing why he’s become one of the best pitchers in the National League. But today, he won’t be great.

He needed more than 120 pitches to finish the complete game — a pitch count that’s tough to recover from. Arrieta shouldn’t be a full strength, giving gamblers a rare opportunity to get a favorable price on the Cardinals at home. St. Louis has the best record in baseball and plays great at home on weekends because its fan base is one of the best in sports.

Additionally, the Cubs have become contenders in the National League Central, surely getting the Cardinals' attention. I’m guessing St. Louis makes a statement today that it’s the better team.

Standings: Bern (84-73-1, $11,405), Keefer (82-86-2, $8,042), Brewer (72-89-3, -$415)
