Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander warms up before a spring training baseball game against the New York Mets in Lakeland, Fla., Saturday, March 8, 2014.

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Yankees at Tigers over 7.5 runs at plus-105: $300 to win $315

All the money has come in on the under, driving the total down from 8, and it doesn’t take a meteorologist to figure out why. It’s cold in Detroit. Below freezing even. Conventional wisdom indicates it’s hard to get into an offensive battle when dugouts have to be stocked with hand warmers and hot chocolate.

While there’s some truth to that, it’s also somewhat overblown. Teams can still score in the cold, particularly these two teams.

The hitters at Comerica Park are going to have an advantage over the pitchers today. Neither Yankees starter Masahiro Tanaka nor Tigers starter Justin Verlander come into this season without concern, though they both fared decently in their first starts.

The lineups they’re facing today are capable of getting to them. In these teams’ combined nine games so far, seven have gone over the total.

It’s reasonable to think the Yankees and Tigers could keep up the hot hitting to end the first week of the season.
