The longest stretch in Super Bowl history without repeat champions extended to 11 straight years Sunday with the Denver Broncos’ victory over the Carolina Panthers.
Odds are high the streak won’t end a year from now at Super Bowl 51 in Houston either. The Westgate Las Vegas Superbook lists six teams ahead of Denver to win next season’s Lombardi Trophy — Seattle, New England, Pittsburgh, Carolina, Green Bay and Arizona.
The Broncos are offered at 14-to-1 going into an offseason when the future of many of their key contributors remains uncertain. Starting quarterback Peyton Manning is expected to retire and backup Brock Osweiler, who was more efficient on the year, is an unrestricted free agent.
Defensive players free to test the market include Super Bowl MVP Von Miller, leading tackler Danny Trevathan and Malik Jackson, who recovered a fumble to score the first touchdown in Sunday’s game.
The teams ahead of Denver benefit from more settled roster situations including Carolina, which has most of its stars locked up with the exception of All-Pro cornerback Josh Norman.
The Broncos opened at 8-to-1 to win the Super Bowl at this time in 2015, making it three straight years in which one of the top five favorites emerged as champions. The Panthers came close to tying the 2001 Patriots as the longest-shot champions of the last 20 years after they got as high as 60-to-1 in the offseason, but fell short.
