Post 31 News:

Legion members honored at monthly meeting

American Legion Post 31 got off to a good start at its monthly meeting Jan. 6. Three plaques of appreciation were awarded to members who contributed unusual time and effort to post activities during the past year. Commander Doug McHam also announced that the post was over 100 percent of its membership goal for the year, something every post strives for but doesn't always make.

The three receiving honors were awarded a golden, engraved plaque on dark wood suitable as a wall decoration in an honored spot. Howard "Scottie" Scott received his for establishing the now annual Post 31 golf tourney as a fund-raiser for post charitable activities. Scott is retiring as chairman of the event after several successful years, but will undoubtedly be involved in the activities.

Dave Mulligan was awarded his plaque for the time and work he puts in during a year. Mulligan not only sees to maintenance of every facet of Legion Hall, but also is one of the more faithful workers setting up and tearing down tables, chairs, special lighting, etc., for the many activities of post members. His next big chore will be the annual St. Patrick's Day party on March 17.

Ruth Taylor was awarded her plaque for the "endless hours" she has given working as Post 31 chairperson for all the various events including the St. Patrick's Day shindig. She not only oversees the cooking and decorations, but rounds up all the presents and stages the raffles.

Taylor also announced she has recently successfully taken all the tests and shots required of a full-fledged volunteer at the Nevada State Veterans Home. "I spent so much time there, I figured I might as well volunteer," she said.

There are two Post 31 members currently residing at the home. Bob Swanson and Fred Washburn, both longtime Legion members, are looking forward to seeing any of their many Boulder City friends who may wish to visit them.

McHam announced that plans are under way to get at least two, and possibly as many as four, Boulder City High School seniors for Boys State this year.

Service Officer Nancy Nollette said she is completing the paperwork for markers on the eight graves of veterans at the Boulder City Cemetery that are currently unmarked. She hopes to get the markers in place by Memorial Day so they can also be honored by flags and crosses that day.

The Post 31 honorary firing squad is still using the old World War I rifles, but apparently Legion National Headquarters has finally authorized the Army to send newer arms. Members are hoping to have them soon. Clayton Glenn, Post 31 representative at the Veterans Cemetery, said those who serve on the Honor Guard should be commended for the job they do, often called at the last minute to show up at the cemetery to deliver the final salute to a deserving veteran.

McHam proudly announced that members were sitting on the new chairs just arrived at Legion Hall. Those present applauded the sturdier, more comfortable folding chairs under them.

The Thursday morning coffee/breakfast get-togethers have resumed now that the holidays are over. Both Christmas and New Years were on a Thursday, and we gave Chef McHam and his kitchen crew those days off. The coffee will be hot from 7 to 9 each Thursday morning.

The next business meeting of Post 31 will be Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m. All veterans are welcome. Legion Hall is located at 508 California Ave.
