Gorman, Palo Verde flex muscles; we need a 3A league

Las Vegas Sun reporters Case Keefer and Ray Brewer talk about finding more competitive games for several struggling programs in the 4A classification — like in the 3A. Oh, Gorman and Palo are still the cream of the crop.

Palo Verde continued rolling Friday night against Shadow Ridge.

The Panthers improved to 7-0 on the season and shut out the Mustangs (2-4) until the final minutes. Palo Verde prevailed 45-7.

“I’m happy with our defense,” Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost said. “We’ve barely had any points scored on us in league play.”

In four Northwest Division games, Palo Verde has outscored its opponents 205-26. Most of those 26 points have come with Palo Verde’s backups in the game with the score out of reach.

But Rost has more than just the defense to be proud of. The Panthers offense has also looked unstoppable.

Brandon Wright had 16 carries against Shadow Ridge for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Jonathan Maxwell followed last week’s big performance with 11 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Garrett Rost also scored his first touchdown of the season and had 33 yards on three carries. Shadow Ridge’s only score came at the end of regulation when Zach Ducksworth caught a long pass.
