As far as debuts go, the Sun’s NFL handicapping contest was like a Broadway play that critics unanimously pan after opening night.
It was a disastrous beginning. Asked to make six picks on either sides or totals, the Sun sports staff posted a combined 5-13 record.
Case Keefer and Ray Brewer went 2-4, and Taylor Bern came in one game behind at 1-5. It was the most embarrassing display of NFL prognostication since New York Jets coach Rex Ryan picked his team to win the Super Bowl last season.
The Jets got off to a hot start in 2012, however, by beating the Bills 48-28. Predictably, no one in this contest had New York as three-point favorites.
In case the performance doesn’t sound bleak enough, consider two different participants selected three teams in week one. All three teams — the Kansas City Chiefs, Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers — failed to cover or win.
Three teams received identical support in week two — the New England Patriots as 13.5-point home favorites against the Arizona Cardinals, the St. Louis Rams getting three points at home against the Washington Redskins, and the New Orleans Saints as 2.5-point road favorites versus the Carolina Panthers.
But one of the three contestants also picked against the Saints.
