Metro Police motorcycle officer hit by SUV during traffic stop

A motorcycle officer was hit by an SUV and injured Thursday night while conducting a traffic stop on Tropicana Avenue, Metro Police said.

The accident happened about 11:05 p.m. on eastbound Tropicana, east of Tenaya Way, police said.

The motorcycle, with its red and blue flashing lights activated, was parked in the right lane of Tropicana, and the officer was standing next to it as he concluded a traffic stop, police said.

A 2004 Ford Explorer was headed east on Tropicana when it hit the motorcycle and the officer from behind, police said.

The officer, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to University Medical Center with minor to moderate injuries, police said.

The driver of the Explorer, Jadene Canasa, 22, of Las Vegas was cited with failing to pay full attention to driving and failing to slow and move to the left when approaching a stopped emergency vehicle with flashing lights, police said.

There were no signs of impairment from alcohol or drugs, police said.
