Coroner: Body found at Lake Mead is missing fisherman

A body recovered Tuesday at Lake Mead has been confirmed as that of 67-year-old boater James E. Schafer, who went missing last week, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Schafer, a Henderson resident, was reported missing about 5 p.m. Aug. 10 after the 17-foot BassCat boat he took out for a fishing trip was reported floating unoccupied on the lake, according to the National Park Service.

He is believed to have launched the boat about 4 a.m. Aug. 10 at Callville Bay, and his body was found Tuesday about 8:30 a.m. in the Virgin Basin off Middle Point, according to the Park Service.

Volunteer search crews from Earth Resource Group found the body using an underwater camera, Park Service officials said.

The cause and manner of death have not yet been released by the Coroner’s Office.

Earth Resource Group joined the National Park Service, U.S. Air Force and Nevada Army National Guard in searching for Schafer, officials said.
