RENO — The U.S. Honor Flag has arrived for a funeral in Reno to be presented to the family of a 30-year-old Carson City deputy who was killed over the weekend in a shootout responding to a domestic violence call.
Deputy Carl Howell's funeral procession is scheduled to pass the Capital in Carson City shortly after 9 a.m. Thursday headed for the 11 a.m. service at the downtown Reno Events Center.
Howell left behind a wife and four young children.
Sheriff Ken Furlong says they couldn't find a big enough place in Carson City to accommodate the crowd expected to pay last respects to the nine-year veteran of his force.
Furlong says Howell was tough enough to risk his life for others, but kind enough to take the hand of a child to walk across the street.
