Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer spend some extra time on the three biggest games of the week — Arbor View at Desert Pines, Chandler (Arizona) at Bishop Gorman and Liberty at Saint Louis (Hawaii) — before getting to their full picks. They also discuss the hypothetical first pick of a high school football fantasy draft.

Moapa Valley gained 172 yards of total offense Friday night in a season-opening 35-21-road victory over Sierra Vista.

Preseason All-City team member R.J. Hubert nearly doubled that amount in all-purpose yards. The senior superstar had a season debut for the ages, scoring all five touchdowns for the defending Division 1A state champions.

“RJ made big plays for us all night,” Moapa Valley coach Brent Lewis said. “We’re going to have to have other kids step up or teams are going to put five guys on him but we just felt like he had to touch it as much as he could tonight.”

Sierra Vista went up 7-0 early when Moapa Valley fumbled in its own territory, but the lead evaporated in minutes when Hubert returned a kick 85 yards for a touchdown. It was just the start of the variety show from one of the best receivers in the state.

Hubert went on to score two receiving touchdowns, a rushing touchdown and returned a fumble that he forced for a touchdown. He actually found the end zone twice more, but they were called back by penalties.

Moapa Valley lost four fumbles in a game Lewis already predicted was the ugliest of the year.

“For a first game, we were way worse than I expected but it’s all fixable things,” Lewis said.
