VALHALLA, N.Y. — National Transportation Safety Board officials investigating a deadly commuter train crash hope to have answers soon to how fast the train was going, whether its brakes were applied and whether its horn was sounded as it approached a crossing where it slammed into an SUV.
NTSB Vice Chairman Robert Sumwalt said investigators planned to examine the Metro-North Railroad train's black-box-style recorders Wednesday. He noted that the track signals also have recording devices that will be scrutinized.
He says officials also hope to interview the train's operators within the next two days, but he notes that they have been through emotional and possibly physical trauma.
Investigators also are looking for witnesses and any aerial footage of Tuesday's wreck in Valhalla, about 20 miles north of New York City.
