A swarm of bees has forced the closure of a highway rest area near Searchlight for the second time in less than three months.

The state Department of Transportation today shut down the Southern Nevada Visitors Center along northbound U.S. 95, just south of Searchlight, because of a bee infestation, officials said.

Maintenance workers discovered hundreds of bees swarming water faucets, toilets and other facilities and immediately closed the center about 11 a.m., officials said.

The rest area was closed in June because of a similar problem.

“NDOT crews are working diligently to quickly resolve this issue,” agency spokesman Tony Illia said. “It’s important to make this rest area safe and accessible once again for motorists.”

The rest area will remain closed until it can be safely reopened, officials said.
