Station Casinos has bought and closed a pair of popular Southern Nevada bars to open new Wildfire Casinos. The locals casino operator has shut down the Lift Bar, a popular joint at 3045 S. Valley View Blvd., and Doc Hollidays in Henderson.

Palace Station has opened a new gaming area called The Casino Bar. The bar is outfitted with 10 55-inch flat-screen televisions all tuned to sports, as well as 30 $1 and 25-cent video poker machines on the bar.

When California voters approved Las Vegas-style gambling in 1998, proponents said it would be limited to places already recognized as American Indian lands. But a rare ruling from the Obama administration and a deal approved by Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown would allow one tribe to build a casino on a 300-acre property owned by Station Casinos in the Central Valley town of Madera. The prospect has divided Indian tribes and touched off an intense fight in the Capitol.

To the experienced online poker player, Station Casinos' Ultimate Poker website can feel like a trip back to the Stone Age. Players have complained about the software, interface and speed. Station officials say they are aware of the criticism and are working to improve the site. Despite the glitches, they met their goal: being the first legal, real-money poker site in the country. In fact, Station executives say some of the shortcomings may help them.

The race to roll out the first legal, real-money poker website in the United States is over — and it ended in Nevada. Station Casinos on Tuesday launched a 30-day trial of UltimatePoker.com, which allows in-state gamblers to play online poker from computers or mobile devices. “It’s a new day in online gaming,” Ultimate Poker Chairman and Founder Tom Breitling said. “Nevada is first, and Nevada should be proud.”

Local clergy members have published a letter addressed to Station Casinos urging the company to play along with the Culinary Union’s efforts to organize. “We have met with workers from Station Casinos, heard their cries for justice, and we cannot stand by idly,” the letter reads. It was written March 29 and signed by more than 80 members of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice. “We pray you soften your hearts, hear your workers, and agree to a fair process.”
