The Magician has become ambassador. Antonio Esfandiari, a two-time World Poker Tour champion, has signed with Stations Casino-owned Ultimate Poker to promote its website as a brand ambassador, the company announced Tuesday.

Station Casinos is updating its video poker offerings with new machines that let players customize backgrounds and the way cards are dealt. But at the same time, the casino company is removing many of its highest-paying video poker games. For years, Station has been known for having some of the best video poker payouts in Las Vegas. But over the past few months, several full-pay machines — those with payouts of 100 percent or more — have disappeared.

While police continue to search for a suspect in last week's shooting and taxi explosion that killed three people on the Strip, the question remains: Will the violence discourage people from coming to Las Vegas? Most tourism leaders say it won’t, and a local expert in crisis communications said the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority did all the right things to assure the public that Las Vegas is a safe place to visit.

Ray Esposito has never had a Christmas season as busy as this one. Esposito runs Superior Event Services, a Las Vegas off-site catering company that opened in 2005. Business is booming this year because more companies are throwing holiday parties. Esposito said he has catered 460 events so far this month, more than double than during the depths of the recession.

Third-quarter financials are in for the Las Vegas gaming industry, and they show continued difficulties for two of the valley’s three main casino sectors. While most high-end Strip resorts saw profits in the quarter ending Sept. 30, mass market Strip casinos struggled, as did locals casinos. The Strip’s budget properties faced an uphill battle trying to get recession-weary customers to part with their dollars. Some of the casinos also played unlucky, meaning they didn’t win as much as usual from gamblers.
