Growing up in Manila, Efren Veando was 19 when Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier fought for the third and final time, in 1975, in the epic Thrilla in Manila at Araneta Coliseum. Friday afternoon, after the 53-year-old Veando loaded several bags of groceries in the back of his SUV in the Seafood City parking lot, he was asked about Manny Pacquiao. “He started out selling cigarettes and now he’s our great champion," Veando said. "He understands where he started. He gives a lot of hope to the youth of the Philippines."

- NORTH BETHESDA, Md. – Tristan Thompson’s first phone call was to Cory Joseph, his close pal since the fourth grade in the Toronto area, at Findlay College Prep in the Henderson foothills. Thompson had just been dismissed from St. Benedict’s in Newark, N.J. He asked Joseph about becoming a Pilot. Joseph thought he was joking that night. “I was being serious,” Thompson said.

It had nothing to do with being benched by Findlay College Prep basketball coach Mike Peck this season. It had everything to do with sitting in that seat at Living Dead Tattoo on Rainbow. When Findlay returns from the ESPN RISE National High School Invitational in Maryland after this weekend, he will have U-N-L-V inked behind the ball. - Doubleheaders switched to CSN this weekend
