Letter to the editor:

City has tools to fight coronavirus

Now that we know that the federal government is ill-prepared to help us in this pandemic, we must realize that the only way we will be able to overcome this crisis is to do it ourselves.

We need to think outside the box. The most important thing now is protection for health care workers. When I was young, the protective clothing the doctors and nurses had was not disposable. It was laundered and reused. MGM Resorts International’s properties, as well as other casinos, have immense laundry facilities sitting dormant. Why not use them? The vendors that supply thousands of uniforms for casinos could make protective clothing.

Next, we are running out of hospital beds, yet there are 10,000 beds unoccupied at the corner of Tropicana Avenues and Las Vegas Boulevard. We have 2 million square feet of vacant space at the Las Vegas Convention Center. Take the beds there.

My parents’ and Jim Murren’s parents’ generation was faced with an enemy the likes of which could not be imagined in WWII. They proved up to the task.

Our generation is now faced with an enemy that could hardy be imagined as well. Will we prove to be up to the task?

Let us show the state, the country and the world what “Vegas Strong” truly means.
