LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Let kids stand up to bullies

The April 23 letter “Policy changes can fix schools” includes, among many proposals to reduce violence in public schools, the suggestion that anyone fighting in school should be suspended. The rest of the writer’s proposals seem to be spot on, but no this one.

I have no problem with suspending the attackers, but I take issue with suspending students who defend themselves when attacked. I understand that it may not always be quick and easy to figure out who is the aggressor and who is the defender, but neither should any student give up the right to self-defense as a condition of attending school.
