Letter to the editor:

Congress needs to take action

Instead of fixing immigration, Congress has used the matter as a political football — kicking responsibility from one political party to the other.

We face three options. First, people who are trying to flee violence or poverty. Second, people who want to work in seasonal jobs and later return to their homesand repeat the process the next year. Third are people who don’t want to follow any law or process.

In the first case we should beef up our embassy staffs to reduce application-processing time for asylum in migrants’ home countries.

In the second case, embassy staff could issue work visas in the home country and then those who have them and those granted asylum could cross the border in an orderly way at permanent crossing points.

The third case would be the responsibility of the border patrol.

Come on Congress, do your job.
