LETTTER TO THE EDITOR:

GOP hung up on losing issue

If there is one issue that Republicans lost many elections on in 2022, it was trying to make abortion illegal.

And yet, the new Republican-controlled House passed two anti-abortion bills the very first week it took the majority. It passed a bill against something that does not exist — the killing of babies born in spite of an attempted abortion. And it passed a bill against violence toward sham emergency centers established to try to trick pregnant women into not seeking an abortion.

These bills are not going anywhere. They have no chance of becoming law. They were passed simply to show Republican support for what all states have shown to be unpopular — the criminalization of abortion.

These bills are the first of what portends to be total dysfunction in the House of Representatives. There is simply no way to save it. Like what we saw with the dysfunction of the Trump administration, this House activity will provide lots and lots of fodder for conservative ingenuity in attempting to excuse or hide its own embarrassment.
