LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Time to restore faith in court

America is overdue to check the balance of the Supreme Court.

Aren’t lifetime appointments typically reserved for monarchs who answer to no one? To bestow such an honor on a Supreme Court justice was naive and set up the nation for disastrous predicaments when less than honorable actions are engaged.

We’re supposed to be progressing as a nation. Yet nearly 30% of Americans have lost access to reproductive health care because a fringe partisan group wants to force their self-righteous dictatorial religious beliefs on the entire nation.

Voting rights are being attacked at multiple levels of government. Partisan groups are searching for the weakest links to break to undermine democracy and make our votes meaningless. Commonsense gun reform is undermined. Corporate money infiltrates politics at a staggering level. Environmental protections are either not in place where needed or are eroding. Profit before people prevails too often and we suffer. Supreme Court justices are supposed to be a unifying force but too often are not.

Given the nation’s growth, it’s time to add more seats in an effort to restore balance and faith in our judicial system. There also needs to be a logical and easily enforceable code of ethics established for the highest court. Congress has a constitutional duty to act as a check on the Supreme Court.

We are in a crisis that needs our attention. Civic awareness and engagement are crucial and citizens need to demand better from their legislators on all levels of government.
