LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Don’t downplay serious charges

The writer of the June 19 letter “Indictment of Trump is overblown,” opined that former President Donald Trump’s retention of classified documents at Mar-a-Lago was equivalent to “taking out some library books and not returning them on time.”

It is disheartening that some people so cavalierly underestimate the importance of this country’s top-secret information. The classified documents at issue include information about this nation and others’ defense and weapons capabilities, nuclear programs and plans for possible military retaliation in response to a foreign attack. If leaked, these classified documents put our national security as well as the lives of Americans and our allies at risk.

The recent indictment is about far more than an administrative oversight. Even the most ardent Trump supporter should be able to recognize this difference.
