LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Christian nation would be chaotic

Contrary to the insistence by those such as evangelist David Barton that “America was founded as a Christian nation,” the text of the U.S. Constitution makes no mention of God, Jesus Christ or Christianity.

This was intentional, as the Founding Fathers declared that the Constitution, and not the Bible, was the highest authority in the land.

The First Amendment clearly states in part, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion …”

In addition to insulting the other approximately 4,000 non-Christian religions, one cannot help but ponder what would ensue if the Christians prevailed and we adopted Christianity as our official religion.

Consider the chaos, name calling and bible thumping brawls that will ensue when conservative Christians try to define “what is a true Christian.”

Is it a Catholic? Is it a Protestant? If it’s a Protestant, is it a Lutheran, a Presbyterian, a Baptist or a Methodist?

If a Baptist or Methodist, is it the regular blend or the Southern?

What about the newbies? Maybe they will say a real Christian is a Mormon or a Jehovah’s Witness, or a Pentecostal, all of whom assert that the true version of a Christian came into existence less than 200 years ago.

Let’s establish Christianity as our official religion, then sit back and watch all the wealthy TV mega pastors fight over who should rightfully receive all the tithes.
