LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

We’ve no need for assault rifles

No civilian has the constitutional right to own, purchase or operate a weapon of mass destruction (i.e., an assault rifle).

What do people do with assault rifles? Protect themselves? From what? When when the last time an armed militia stormed your home? Then I guess people just use the weapon for target practice. What are they practicing for? Shooting rabbits? One would find no pieces of the rabbit just annihilated, similar to what remains after shooting a child.

When the Constitution was penned, the closest weapon to an assault rifle was a one-shot musket which took five minutes to lock and load. People have a decent chance of surviving a gunshot wound from a pistol. Republican legislators should take a look at autopsy photographs of children who were shot just once by an assault rifle. And then take another photograph of one of their kids enjoying life.

Times have changed and so has the weaponry. We have no right to own one of these monstrosities, just as we have no right to own a nuclear weapon.

I know law enforcement has had enough. Doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, first responders and the rest of the medical community is tired of it, and I am sure the countless families and other loved ones whose lives will never recover are tired of it.
