LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Israel has gone overboard

The horrific slaughter of innocent Israeli citizens by Hamas on Oct. 7 was among the most appalling acts committed by any nation or group in modern history. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu immediately declared war on Hamas and announced a “mighty vengeance” while displaying a rage-fueled desire for retribution.

But making decisions at a time of intense emotion often clouds our ability to think clearly about potential ramifications. Israel has a right to defend itself, but how it defends itself matters.

The U.S. learned a hard lesson from its invasion of Iraq in 2003. Israel may be headed down the same path in Gaza. Any military strategy that ignores massive civilian death and suffering could backfire.

There have been pro-Palestinian protests and anti-bombing protests in major cities throughout the world. Israel has squandered the worldwide sympathy and international support it had after Oct. 7. It may even drive the majority of Palestinians to rally behind Hamas or create a power vacuum in the region, which could pave the way for new terrorist organizations.

Innocent Gazans are experiencing brutal collective punishment. There is almost no food or clean water, and extreme shortages of fuel and medical supplies. UN experts have warned that the Palestinians are at grave risk of genocide.

Israel must change course before it’s too late. The loss of support from the international community is eroding its legitimacy, undermining its public image and weakening its long-term security.
