Today marks the beginning of Shenanigans Week in Carson City — or at least the first Shenanigans Week of the session. That’s because Friday is the first major deadline, when bills have to be passed out of the committee in the house where they originated. So there will be much maneuvering by lawmakers and lobbyists to get their pet bills passed or legislation they don’t like entombed. And, of course, it is mostly a sham because the deadline is not real. It’s not real because nothing is ever dead, despite these putative deadlines, until sine die. A bill jailed in one committee can be resurrected on the floor as an amendment or in the other house as an amendment. So there will be lots of drama, but nothing will really be finalized.
