FLASHPOINT:

Not a good symbol

For many years Las Vegas and its spectacular construction projects have been symbols of many things. Ingenuity. Excess. Gaudiness. But now the most expensive private construction project in the country is a symbol of something else. “$9B CityCenter project a symbol of world’s economic woes,” blared the headline on a Web site, SmartBrief. The site linked to a piece by Reuters about the problems facing CityCenter, which is trying to find investors and is negotiating special conditions with its banks to avoid bankruptcy. But what is happening at CityCenter, the headline implies, is happening all over the world, with overleveraged companies all but begging banks to help them out. Not a symbol CityCenter covets, I’d guess.
