The Somali pirates have been appropriately dispatched by U.S. Navy SEALs. If the U.S. media have been reasonably reliable, we learned that the president had been in ongoing strategy sessions with his advisers and in a low-key approach, which focused attention not on himself and his new crisis but on the issue of freeing the U.S. captain.
Had the Navy failed, the right most certainly would have “credited” the president accordingly.
Had this been President George W. Bush’s pirate ordeal, my guess is that Fox News would have celebrated him as he strode around in SEAL gear, surrounded by jubilant (real) SEALs.
The episode confirms what critics of President Barack Obama find so difficult to swallow: There is an intelligent, decisive and cool hand at the helm, and the change is refreshing.
Next heartburn for the fractious right: normalization of relations with Havana.
