FLASHPOINT:

Humanity in politics

One of the saddest things about politics, infused with cynicism and phoniness, is that the likely reaction of too many to reports that state Sen. Steven Horsford held back tears testifying about cuts in a disadvantaged youth program is that most people will not think it was sincere. But having watched politicians as they treated such programs as lines on a spreadsheet, as they blithely voted against children while saying they support education, as they lopped thousands of families off health care under the cloak of fiscal conservatism, my question is this: Why doesn’t it happen more often? If more legislators actually considered the real-world consequences of their behavior, maybe they would be a little more responsible.
